Telling Luke the truth was not part of Mitchell’s plan. He wanted to remove both Luke and Elliot from Sortis, only it couldn’t be done as simply as marching them both through the gates to freedom. Like all RR worker androids, Commander Price was fitted with a tracking device. Unless Mitchell accessed the HAI-21 blueprints, which were securely hidden by Jon Rylor, the tracker couldn’t be deactivated. Whether Elliot was fitted with the same kind of tracker, Mitchell didn’t know. He assumed his son would be considered just another worker android by Jon and, therefore, trackable.
Elliot’s accusations resounded like an echo inside Mitchell’s mind. His son said it in anger and grief, yet the blame for Luke’s life and death situation lay heavily on Mitchell’s shoulders. At least, that’s how he felt about it now as he walked toward Jon’s office. When Mitchell had held Luke in his arms, he feared he’d made the wrong choice in disclosing the truth. But, he’d witnessed that same kind of emotional slide into depression with Elliot. Mitchell denied Elliot in the beginning and the results were disastrous. Luke was denied access to his family and the results seemed to have had the same terrible effects. Over the past three and a half months, the HAI-21 prototype Luke Price exhibited similar signs. More slowly than Elliot due to his mental maturity, yet just as surely. He’d been caught several times on security cameras in the throes of panic attacks, or close to tears, and he didn’t cope well with stress.
One of HAI-21’s major issues was the incredibly sensitive human emotion processor. Everything sped up at a rate too fast to regulate correctly. Perhaps Luke noticed this himself and perhaps he didn’t. Just like Elliot, his personality changed. Whereas the human Luke Price kept a cool, calm head in all situations, the HAI-21 Luke Price did not. He processed too much data far too quickly, resulting in an inability to control it. It was the reason Mitchell told Luke to disarm. A HAI-21 android was, in Mitchell’s opinion, human not machine. In his heart and mind, that’s how he saw them. However, to not acknowledge differences between humans and HAI-21 androids was to bury his head in the sand.
Mitchell closed his eyes and shook his head, running shaky fingers through his hair. Remembering what happened hours before and the blood-spattered aftermath. The shocked, stunned motionlessness that kept Luke somewhat composed had snapped. Mitchell couldn’t think fast enough to stop the overload of Luke’s emotion processor. With Elliot the task wasn’t as complicated. Mitchell could reach out to his son. Offer a hug or fatherly advice. These overloads didn’t stop at moody tantrums. The HAI-21 emotion processor reacted too fast to all types of stimulation. Good and bad. They could despise someone in a microsecond, form friendships almost as quickly, and fall in love within hours.
‘You understand?’ Luke had shrieked. ‘You tell me I’m an android and you understand?’
Luke had snatched the gun off the table. The gun Mitchell thoughtlessly put down within Luke’s reach.
